This is a rare view of the Fivel River/Canal in Appingedam, The Netherlands, painted by Dutch artist, J. J. Veeger. It shows two boats on the river, with a village and smoke stack in the background, cows grazing in the field on the left and an old, ca. 1550, chalk burner on the left side of the painting. On the back of the canvas is written: "Fivel", "3b" and "Appingedam". Appingedam is a city in northeast Netherlands, in the province of Groningen. The Fivel River/Canal is a historical river in the same province which received its water from peat bogs. It is now barely visible.
