ITEM DESCRIPTION: This is an oil on canvas depicting a Dutch genre scene of a young woman, standing in front of a mantle, reading a book. She is in one of the many traditional Dutch costumes. This lovely portrait was painted by Baroness Marie Alexandra Johanna ("Manja") von Engehardt-Herschel. She was born in Estland (Estonia), 1895. She lived and worked in Berlin, then from 1931, she lived in The Hague, The Netherlands. She was noted for her paintings of figures and portraits. This painting signed and dated (1916) upper right and it comes in a beautiful gold frame.
